Clothes
Common clothing appropriate for most golf courses consists of collared polo style shirts and khaki style shorts/pants.
Some smaller public courses will let you wear jeans.
During cooler weather, sweaters or rain pullovers with long pants are appropriate.
Golfers can always buy golf specific apparel which would certainly be appropriate as well.
Footwear
Golf shoes are highly recommended as they give your feet extra grip, not to mention aid you in looking the part.
The two main types of golf shoes are spiked (traditional) and spikeless.
Both types provide textured soles that help keep you from slipping during your swing.
Spiked golf shoes do this through having multi-pronged plastic spikes that screw or twist into the sole. As the spikes wear down they can be removed and replaced with new spikes.
Spikeless golf shoes have a molded sole that have different protruding textures which accomplish much the same thing.
Either type is fine. It simply depends on preference of style and feel. The more traditional looking golf shoes are usually spiked and the more tennis shoe style are usually spikeless.
Headwear
Most golfers wear baseball cap style hats or visors.
Most golf brands have their logos on a variety of hats.
While the previously mentioned hats are most popular there are other less common types.
*(Any hat with a golf brand on it is okay to wear, some might just stand out a bit more.)
Accessories
While not absolutely necessary, the vast majority of golfers wear a golf glove while playing (except while putting).
The glove goes on the bottom hand, the hand closest to you on the golf grip.
Right-handed golfers use a left-hand glove and left-hand golfers use a right-hand glove.
*(Make sure you pay attention when buying a glove, as the glove you need is opposite the hand you golf.)
